It’s that time of year again, firewood roundup time for our outdoor wood boiler. When we built our home, we added pex pipe in each and every floor of our home, including the garage, and both porches.
Our home is so efficient, that no matter how cold it gets, the only way our furnace will ever come on is, if we stop putting wood in the boiler and allow it to burn down. In extreme cold, we fill the boiler in the mornings and in the evening before we come in for the day. Above 20-25 degrees we fill once per day. Our thermostat is always on 71 degrees and it’s perfect.
Firewood Roundup Time
These locust trees shown below make incredible firewood for hot and long burns, but dealing with the thorns can be a bit of a pain, if you know what I mean. Good heavy leather gloves and good thick soled leather work boots are an absolute must!!

On acreage with timber, there is always down trees, due to wind, storms and dead trees due to bugs, etc. Locust trees are well known for growing fast and large, and never establishing deep roots, which leads to short life and dead fall.

There are some of the larger, more straight trees that are solid cores that I can run through my TimberKing sawmill and get some lumber from, then cut up the remains from each of those for firewood.
Central Boiler – Titanium 560
Our Central Boiler is an outdoor wood boiler than is very efficient and effective. All of the mess remains outside and the old days of smoke smell inside your home and on your clothes is gone, when using the system we have. Our floors are always warm and there are no cold spots in our home. We can walk barefoot anywhere in our home, or in the garage and the floors are nice and warm. Shown below is a picture of our mechanical room, and with this set up, we can adjust the different zones and heat for each room, garage and porches.

Even though it’s firewood roundup time, it’s all trees that have died and we cut down, or it’s trees that have fell down and scraps off of the sawmill. Even though it takes some work, I look at it being outdoors, staying active, and it’s a great workout to keep healthy. The best part, we never have to purchase firewood, or propane, or natural gas!
Nothing like wood 🪵 heat!
Always do your best,
