I’m sure you’ve heard it to, that the Stihl 400C-M needs an oil pump upgrade (460 oil pump…)? This improves performance a bunch on this 400C. This should have been done right from the factory, especially for what these saws cost.
Stihl create an absolute beast of a chainsaw with this 400C-M, but they fell way short when it came to the oil pump for the bar and chain oiler. I’ve got a 25” bar on this saw, and it wasn’t getting near enough oil to the bar and chain, so I took it apart and added the Stihl 460 oil pump. Now it gets plenty of oil to the bar and chain, like it is suppose to.
These saws should be using a tank of bar oil to a tank of gas, or very close to it, but mine was using 1/2 tank before I made this change. Now it uses a tank of bar oil to a tank of gas. As a matter of fact, I actually had to back off the adjustment screw just a little, because it was over oiling. Even if this 400C had the 20” bar, it still wouldn’t have been enough, the way it came factory. Shame on you Stihl for not testing this saw properly!

The oil pump pictures above here will show the difference in the two. The top one of the 460 pump that I installed. The bottom photo is the factory 400C pump. Look at the pump shaft (splines/gear) and you can see the differences. This is a simple swap out (about 15 minutes). Yes, you can just change the pump shaft, but the simple, drop on solution, is doing what I did, and that is getting the Stihl 460 complete pump, remove the stock one and drop in the 460.

If you do this, just remember, the crankshaft nut is left handed threads. It’s NOT righty tighty, lefty loosey, just the opposite! Lay out clean rags to work on, as you take it apart, keep everything in order and put it back like you took it apart and it’s a piece of cake. You can always find me on Facebook too.
Always do your best,
